July ‘07 - Firefox, Spam, Searches, and other Miscellany

Posted by Peter on July 31st, 2007

I’m back and as random as ever (if you couldn’t judge by the title). It’s time for a late July update. My mom said, “You haven’t posted anything since the 6th! Get with it!”

Firefox
Firefox T-shirtThis month I volunteered to contribute an article to Mozilla’s new work-in-progress codenamed the SUMO project. I think it stands for SUpport MOzilla. Anyways, it’s a database full of help topics for Firefox users to browse when they encounter problems or when they just want to know how to do something with Firefox. As a thank you, I received a bright orange Firefox T-shirt (unlike the picture - apparantly the Mozilla store doesn’t sell orange) in the mail along with a handwritten thank you card from JT in the marketing department (on Mozilla stationery). Thanks, JT. Now I look like a real geek… or at least that’s what my siblings think.

Spam
I’m starting to make a dent in the referral spam I started receiving by the truckload last month. I installed Referrer Karma after Bad Behavior didn’t seem to do the trick. RK has dished out hundreds and hundreds (maybe thousands) of 403 pages to would-be referral spammers. They are no longer zapping bandwidth, but unfortunately, they still show up in my Awstats logs somehow. If anyone reading this has a better idea for killing referral spam please comment.

Searches
What would an end-of-the-month post be without a listing of my crazy searches from this month? I’m beginning to think that blogs are extremely susceptible to crazy searches by nature that a typical blog page contains perhaps 10 (sometimes lengthy) posts on completely unrelated subjects. When a search engine crawls my website, it stores away quite a conglomeration of “random” words when pieced together into search strings makes for some laughs. Ok, here we go…

  • lebanon bologna - this (I suspect) was a Google Images search. Strangely, however, I received all 11 hits from this search string all in one day…
  • eric whitacre water night 14 part harmony - ooo, I could sink my teeth into that for sure
  • -0-10-20 - what is this? Some sort of locker combination?
  • www.peteranglea.com/2006/12/ most relaxing piano album in the world ever! disc 2 download - will the owner of this search string please come forward so I can shake your hand! You’ve won the “longest, most randomest search string for PeterAnglea.com ever” award.
  • diatonic humor - why did the diatonic scale cross the road? I dunno. You tell me.
  • rubber ducks invading england - I know, I wrote a post about this. But it does sound pretty funny does it not?
  • yahtzee how to pronounce - YOT-zee
  • ie bugs laptop scroll minimize maximize window - if you could please state your tech support request in manageable terms, I will be glad to help you out.
  • why am i unable to breath at times - asthma.
  • cleaver german phrases - you mean clever. Sorry, ich sprache kein Duetsch.
  • bju.edu traffic popularity - how am I supposed to know?
  • prepare to meet thy god played on piano - I can’t say that’s in my repertoire, no.
  • how to play nice piano harmony - well, it’s not something I could explain to you in one blog post.

They get more random all the time, folks.

Miscellany

  • Stephen and Christena FaucetteI played my trumpet for a friend’s wedding on the 14th as she came down the aisle. Congrats Chrissy and Stephen.

Another side note of miscellany, I’m working on a top-secret surprise to be revealed right here at PeterAnglea.com in about a month for all BJU students… keep your eyes peeled.

RAM upgrade - a story in photos

Posted by Peter on July 6th, 2007

Yessirree!! This graphic designer has been working with 512MB of RAM for too long! Time for a much needed upgrade. On Monday of this week, I ordered a 1GB memory upgrade online for my ThinkPad X40 (which would max out my computer at about 1.5GB) coming from the West Coast. It got here today, Friday, and this evening’s project was (no doubt) to set about tripling the computing speed of my laptop. I present to you now… a story in photos. One of great joy and anticipation. And it has a happy ending, too!

Here it is - 1GB of RAM in a static safe baggySo I turned off my computer, flipped it over and removed the battery… beautiful isn’t it.Let’s take out the screws and expose some guts!Taking off the lid reveals a sad sight……an empty RAM slot!! Oh, no! It seems unfair that this slot should have no chip in it while the other one does.Let’s put it in, already. Say “Aaaaahhh”I proceeded to insert the chip at a 45 degree angle and then to snap it in placeLet’s close it back up……turn it on and cross our fingers!Whoo-hoo! My computer is officially running 3x faster. My next project…. new battery.

Rubber duckies invade England

Posted by Peter on July 2nd, 2007

This was too good to pass up. From www.bloggernews.net:

Fifteen years ago, off the coast of China, a shipment of bathtub toys was washed overboard. The cardboard wrappings soon rotted away, but the plastic animals were impervious to the elements, and so an estimated 17,000 rubber duckies, frogs, and turtles floated away.

And floated.

And floated.
