Jesus Lives and So Shall I

October 31st, 2009

Jesus Lives Incipit

Full sheet / Half sheet

In celebration of Reformation Day 2009 and the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, I am releasing a new hymn setting that I composed this month. The text is an 18th c. poem by Christian F. Gellert entitled Jesus Lives and So Shall I. I decided to put this text with a new tune, and here it is.

Feel free to use it with your congregations and let me know what you think of it. I hope you enjoy it.

Jesus lives, and so shall I.
Death! thy sting is gone forever!
He who deigned for me to die,
Lives, the bands of death to sever.
He shall raise me from the dust:
Jesus is my Hope and Trust.

Jesus lives, and reigns supreme,
And, his kingdom still remaining,
I shall also be with him,
Ever living, ever reigning.
God has promised: be it must:
Jesus is my Hope and Trust.

Jesus lives! I know full well
Nought from him my heart can sever,
Life nor death nor pow’rs of hell,
Joy nor grief, hence forth forever.
None of all his saints is lost;
Jesus is my Hope and Trust.

Jesus lives, and death is now
But my entrance into glory.
Courage, then, my soul, for thou
Hast a crown of life before thee;
Thou shalt find thy hopes were just;
Jesus is the Christian’s Trust.

  1. Mom says:

    Dad is singing it in church this evening!!

  2. Cindy Johnson says:

    I ran across the words for this hymn while looking for a song for a special this Easter Sunday. While hunting for a tune, yours stood out. We did a quick check of the composer and found you’re a BJU graduate. My husband and I are as well and currently have three children attending there now.

    We’re singing your arrangement on Sunday and will have the congregation join in on the final stanza. Thanks for making your work available!
