One year later

Posted by Peter on December 21st, 2007

This past week marked the first birthday of my site, PeterAnglea.com (I know because I had to renew my hosting fees). Here’s a rundown of some of the things that went on in my neck of the web this year.

  • 47 posts and 87 comments.
  • 1,385 spam comments.
  • thousands more link spam.
  • 1 site design revision

Other notable accomplishments/projects hosted here were:

  • My first WordPress plugin, wpSermons. This is a plugin intended for use in church websites that use WordPress to manage their content. It allows users to easily add mp3 sermons to their website at any time for all to listen to and download. Since its launch in May of ‘07 it has been downloaded about 500 times and is being used on multiple church websites here in America and around the world (and even some non-church websites that found the audio uploader to be just what they were looking for). In fact, I saw one person who make his own audio plugin based off of mine. I thought that was cool.
  • BJU Online March Madness Bracket Content. I had about 20-25 people join in on a March Madness bracket contest for BJ students/faculty/staff. Everyone paid an entrance fee and the money went entirely to the BJU Bible Conference offering which helped to pay for the completion of the parking garage as well as the new entrance to front campus. Participants logged into the site to set up their brackets and view their progress as the contest progressed.
  • BJU Coffee Tycoon. This is probably my best programming achievement to date. I’ll let the site speak for itself, but here’s a little info. Between 80-100 different students (about 50 at the most at one time) were playing this game where the object to sell more coffee on BJU campus than your competitors. The game is played in real-time during the course of the semester. You choose a location on campus to be and start selling coffee. Campus events dictate which spot on campus is more popular at any given time. It’s a strategy game where you must determine what to sell, how much to sell it for, and where to sell it at while at the same time keeping an eye on your competition and using your profits wisely to outfit your coffee stand with “enhancements” that attract more people to buy from you. It was a lot of fun and I’ve talked to several people that told me they spent a few hours strategizing with their friends as to how best to play the game. They were very competitive to say the least! The best part is that it’s not time consuming as you might expect. If you’re a BJU student, try it out next semester. It will continue to run in future semesters as long as people like playing it. :)

All in all, not a bad year for PeterAnglea.com. I hope you enjoy reading this site as much as I enjoy putting stuff on it.

So much to say, so little time to say it

Much has happened since my last blog update from the first day of classes. For one, another month has come and gone. You know what that means! Yes, all the random searches and other statistical information from Peter Anglea dot com! For those that are new this kind of stuff, this is basically some of the more random things that people have searched for (via Google, etc.) that led to them clicking on my site. These are from August.

  • lefthanders day - it should be a national holiday. people should get off work and all that jazz.
  • scholarship money for left-handers - I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to that.
  • sad violin.midi - have you nothing better to search for than this?
  • vio vgn - uh-huh, yeah… whatever.
  • 3-6-2-5-1 music progression - a typical chord progression indeed. I actually heard of a music teacher that lived in the 36251 zip code.
  • cardboard stationery for firefox - ok. hold on. who in the world uses cardboard stationery? and what would prompt firefox to join that trend?
  • finale 2007 compound duple - yeah, wouldn’t that would 6/8 time?
  • gum transplant pictures - no thank you. I made it a point to keep my eyes shut during my gum graft procedure.

The moral of the story is… be careful what you search for on my site. It might end up here.

On to other news. I’m going to try a new approach by filling you in what’s happening in my life in the third person. Sooo….. if my life were a newspaper, then here’s the latest headlines:

  • Practice Makes Perfect
Peter has been practicing a lot since his arrival on campus. Piano practice constitutes as much as 15 hours of his week. This is due to the fact that he will perform his junior recital early next semester and is working very hard to have 15-20 minutes of memorized music down pat. His current repertoire list can be found on the Music page of his website, PeterAnglea.com. In addition to practicing piano, Peter keeps himself busy with 4 hours of choir practice every week. He will be singing in a roughly 90 member choir on October 19th at Bob Jones University in a concert that will feature some of the best in 21st century choral literature. When asked about this upcoming concert, Peter replied, “It’s gonna be swweeeetttt!”
  • Three’s Company
At the beginning of the semester, Peter’s roommates consisted of three great guys - a junior, a sophomore, and a freshman. However, due to some financial issues which caused an APC (Assistant Prayer Captain) in another dorm to leave school, Peter’s junior roommate was asked to fill in the vacant spiritual leadership position in that room, to which he consented. While Peter, Paul, and Tyson were very sad to see him leave, they won’t lie - everyone enjoys a little more elbow room every now and then.
  • Day of Prayer
Students at Bob Jones University enjoyed a refreshing and relaxing Day of Prayer. All university classes were canceled and the day was devoted to prayer and praise to the Lord.
  • Coming to a Laptop Near You (for geeks only)
Ubuntu. Yes, that’s right. Peter has successfully partitioned his external hard drive and now has the ever-popular Linux distribution, Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn), up and running. He is enjoying the User Interface but wishes that other aspects were a bit more user friendly. Peter admits, “Perhaps it’s just my lack of experience [with Ubuntu] that contributes to my minor frustrations with it. I think I’m slowly getting over some of them.”

Until next time, folks…

Site Search Engine and Spam Report - June ‘07

Posted by Peter on June 30th, 2007

Yes, this post brings both good and bad news. Search engine traffic is at an all time high and unfortunately, so is spam. But lets start with some good stuff.

Top Search String for July: wpsermons
My new WordPress plugin has garnered a small bit of attention from several webmasters looking for a way to upload mp3s. Checking my referral stats, it seems that it is being used for several personal blogs as well (posting music and such).

Top Search Keyword for July: safari
My brief review on Safari for Windows brought in a whole slew of search phrases ranging from “safari vs firefox” to “safari scroll thinkpad” to “maximize window javascript safari.” Also a few humorous ones which I will share later.

Also, I received a record number of searches from Google Images this month. In addition, this is the first time I recall being found through Google Cache.

Here then, to bring a smile to your face are some humorous searches that led to my site (with some commentary, of course).

  • things that tick me off - I hope this site isn’t one of them…
  • pianist my website - am I supposed to read that as a verb??
  • how to pronounce kliewer - you might ask Phrank, but I believe it sounds something like “cleaver” as in “meat cleaver.”
  • private piano teacher in ny 2007 updated - that wouldn’t be me, sorry.
  • private piano teacher in usa 2007 updated - I guess they couldn’t find one in New York…
  • dovnload midifil happy birthday - just goes to show how good Google is at correcting spelling mistakes
  • rebeam what means - well, it means to rebeam…
  • relaxing violin midis - did I hear you right? Sorry, but the first mental image that a violin midi sound conjures up is anything but relaxing.
  • pronounce angel - not nearly as challenging as my last name.
  • wordpress template conference - that sounds like fun.
  • safari browser annoys - you ain’t the only one.
  • can’t find the back button on safari - its in the same place as your other browser. I assure you.
  • pandiatonicism tutorial - not here, not now.
  • what does bju dorms look like dorm pictures - not all too glamorous, but quite sufficient I suppose.

In other news, I’ve been receiving an incredible amount of referral spam. When I saw from my stats list that I had received clicks from 765 different websites, I knew something was awry. So, I installed a nice WordPress plugin called Bad Behavior which is starting to stop some of that.

I think eventually I will start showing off how many spam comments Askimet has caught and how many bad links I have stopped to date….
